Displaced tenants of Weyant Green Apartment Complex in Highland Falls will have to wait a while longer to get back into their homes after their storm-damaged buildings were recently deemed unsafe.
The Town of Highlands Building Department issued the management company, Related Management, a notice on Oct. 9 stating that five recently repaired buildings at the complex, located at 40 West Point Highway, are unfit for occupancy due to unpermitted work and lack of fire inspection.
Roughly two dozen tenants remain displaced and housed in nearby hotels due to damages caused by severe flooding during a deadly storm on July 9.
News 12 is told about a dozen tenants were being moved back in when the building department notice was issued.
A representative for Related Management says the issue is the result of a misunderstanding about the steps required for approval of the return of residents and issued a statement:
“Following the devastating flooding in the Highland Falls, we have made considerable and timely repairs to the property all with a focus on getting residents back into their homes as quickly and safely as possible. In the meantime, residents are being offered free hotel accommodations, free meals and free transportation services.”
Many of the residents displaced are seniors or people with disabilities and several have previously told News 12 that their units might not be fully repaired until December.
News 12's call to the Town of Highland Building Department for more information was not immediately returned.
