A Spring Valley man who fled the state after allegedly attacking his stepdaughter with a knife has been extradited back to New York from Georgia to face charges.

Investigators say Walter Carpio-Galicia, 32, stabbed his 15-year-old stepdaughter eight times at her home on South Lake Street Feb. 3. Her name has not been released.

Spring Valley Police Chief Paul Modica says the suspect stole a vehicle believed to be the victim's mother's and drove straight to Georgia, where he wound up getting into an accident.

From there, he was arrested and, after waiving extradition, was brought back to New York with the help of U.S. marshals.

Carpio-Galicia, who is illegally in the U.S., on Friday appeared before a judge, handcuffed and expressionless. The judge ordered that he refrain from communicating in any way with the victim, her mother or younger brother.

The suspect was denied bail and remanded to county jail. He's charged with attempted murder and burglary. A complaint of forcible touching had already been filed by the victim, which police believe may have triggered the alleged stabbing.

The victim has since left the hospital and returned home.
