News 12 has learned the mayor of Spring Valley will not seek reelection this year.
Alan Simon has been mayor since he won in 2017. Several village and political sources say he won’t run again.
Over the years, News 12 has reported on Mayor Simon's tirades toward village employees, news reporters and others – as well as knee-jerk firings of village officials.
In 2021, New York state ordered Rockland County to take over the village’s building department after a fire at an assisted living facility killed two people.
Mayor Simon was not in his office on Tuesday.
The Lamb Social Justice Initiative, along with a handful of other organizations, have come together to sponsor a mayoral forum that will happen next week for the public to hear from potential candidates about their vision and views. So far, six hopefuls have signed up.
"I think we can all come together and educate each other and kind of find out what works for us and what doesn't work for us," said Samuel Lamb, one of the organizers.
The event will take place on Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m. inside the Louis Kurtz Civic Center on North Main Street in Spring Valley.
It could be a crowded field of candidates vying to be the new mayor. The Rockland Board of Elections tells News 12 they have had many inquiries from people about running for the position. Yet an official number will not be known until all petitions are submitted.
