School districts across the country are dealing with a shortage of school bus drivers, including districts in New Jersey.

It's posing a hardship for parents whose kids aren’t getting rides to school. Some want the state or county to get involved and help the districts.

The Edison School District has cut 30 bus routes, including at Lincoln and Washington elementary schools and Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

“We’ve been told that we have to come to school. There is no online facility for us. There’s no chance to do remote,” says parent Kinjal Patel. “We have to come to school, and we don’t have transportation, so that’s inconvenient.

Patel says that what is even more confusing is that there is a child living next door to his family that is being offered a bus ride.

“The irony is that we have a neighbor who is new to the school, and she has been on the bus, but not our daughter,” he says.

In a letter to parents, school officials say, "We know that this is an extreme inconvenience, and we are doing everything possible to correct the situation and hope to have it resolved soon."

Parents say that it is causing an issue when they need to get to work in the morning.

“Right now, I can manage it because I’m working from home. They are telling people to go back in a couple of weeks. I have to go back to work. That’ll be really inconvenient for us,” says Sayed Khaleduzzaman.

Khaleduzzaman has children at JP Stevens High School and John Adams Middle School.

Other school districts in New Jersey dealing with driver shortages include Camden. The situation has become so desperate there that the district is offering families $1,000 to drive their children to school for the year.
