The work on the new Portal North Bridge continues.

It aims to improve one of the most vital rail corridors in North America.

The bridge will replace the current 114-year-old swing bridge, which has been a daily and frequent source of delays and frustration for travelers as it opens for maritime traffic in the Hackensack River.

Sen. Cory Booker toured the site with NJ Transit and Amtrak officials on Wednesday.

He received the latest updates on site. The project is on time and on budget.

In February, the arches were completed on top of the track.

When finished, it will be a modern two-track, high-level, fixed-span bridge - expected to improve service and capacity in the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak says it will run nearly 2.5 miles of the Northeast Corridor.

It will almost double the height clearance over the river and allow marine traffic to pass underneath without interrupting rail traffic.

"I'm very proud of what I'm seeing, I'm very hopeful we can continue this pace, and hit all of our timeline and benchmarks and again in the next few years, New Jerseyians will see a magnificent difference in their lives, in the shortening of their commutes and in their quality of life improving," said Booker.

Both tracks are set to open in 2026.
