Drivers in Rockland County should expect work on two heavily traveled roadways with projects on New York State Route 304 and New York State Route 303.

The announcement was made on Friday in the Clarkstown Town Hall parking lot in New City by state Sen. Bill Weber, who was joined by town officials with Route 304 as a backdrop.

“I’ve said prior to being elected that the amount of taxes we pay, our roads should be paved in gold,” Weber said. “But at a minimum they should be paved consistently. And this is a first great start.”

The project will have a stretch of New York State Route 304 repaved from West Nyack Road to Route 9W.

The project is expected to cost about $16 million in state and federal funds, with construction scheduled to begin sometime this spring and wrap up by the summer of 2027. Much of the work is planned to take place overnight to limit disruptions.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said the nighttime construction was important.

“I’m also delighted that they’ve committed to doing the project at night,” Hoehmann said. “We don’t want businesses to be disrupted. We’ve seen how that’s happened in the past.”

Another road project will target New York State Route 303, from Al Foxie Way to Route 9W.

That project is expected to cost about $9 million in state and federal funds and could be completed by next winter, according to the State Department of Transportation website.

Part of the work will cover a stretch of Route 303 in West Nyack where signs currently warn drivers to “slow down” due to “rough road” conditions.

A state DOT spokesperson said both projects are expected to start this spring but was not able to give an exact date yet.

Drivers News 12 spoke to were happy to hear about the future work, some saying it was a “long time coming.”
