A Riverhead man was arrested Tuesday by Suffolk County police after attempting to burglarize a church while preschooler's were taking classes inside.

Police say 30-year-old Daniel Fanuele tried to kick down the door of Presbyterian Church of the Moriches in an attempt to burglarize the building at 12:50 p.m.

He was then confronted by an employee of Gentle Hearts Preschool, which operates inside the church and left.

Nineteen students and two employees sheltered in place as a precaution until police arrived, officials say, and no one was hurt.

Detectives arrested Fanuele at 2:41 p.m. at the intersection of Coventry Ave. and Mastic Road.

He is charged with attempted burglary and is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
