Residents say they are against the county’s decision to relocate a courthouse to the former A&P Supermarket on Pehlam Road in New Rochelle.
The courthouse is currently located on North Avenue.
Community members say they worry about traffic and the ability for people to reach the site since there is only one bus stop in the area.
Other residents say moving the courthouse into their neighborhood presents a risk to the elderly demographic that takes up the majority of the area.
County officials say they have been attempting to find a new location for the courthouse since 2012. They say the location on Pelham Road fits the criteria perfectly, and time is running out for the court in its current location and for the families and children that need it most.
"We definitely want additional services for young people which will be afforded in the space right here at the A&P,” says NAACP’s Dr. Carla Woolbright. “I'm not sure what the issues are that people are so afraid of having other people coming to their community.”
The county's judicial branch will make the ultimate decision about the new location.
