A preliminary NTSB report says that a deadly plane crash in Orange County was caused by part of the aircraft breaking off.
Pilot Andrew Wright died when the plane he was flying crashed at the New York Air Show at Stewart International Airport on August 28.
The report indicates that the aircraft's tail snapped off while Wright practiced for the air show.
Witness statements and video recordings indicate that the airplane had performed four or five maneuvers and was about two minutes into his routine when the tail suddenly separated from the fuselage. At that time, the airplane was performing an aileron roll while climbing at about a 35-45 degree angle. The airplane subsequently crashed into a grass field near a runway.
