The family of a tugboat crew member is finally getting some closure now that the body of their loved one has been recovered from the Hudson River.
It's been 12 days since that fateful journey from Albany ended in Tarrytown, when the tugboat crashed into a construction barge underneath the center span of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
Harry Hernandez, 56, of Staten Island, was entangled in the front of the 100-ton vessel when it sank 40 feet beneath the Hudson River. The damage to the tugboat so severe that divers couldn't recover the body. A specialized crane was brought in to raise the vessel out of the water and crews were finally able to reach Hernandez's body.
Hernandez's family was at the recovery scene today, and officials say they were sharing stories of how he loved being on the water and how they now have a sense of peace. "You look at the parallel, today being Holy Thursday. The family is very religious, and they found comfort in that their loved one was raised up from the water and can be given back to the family," says Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.
The medical examiner will take the body and perform an autopsy before funeral services will be held.
