Ossining lawmakers say President Donald Trump is taking advantage of a loophole that allows golf courses to pay less in taxes - shifting the burden onto local residents.

A group rallied outside Trump National Golf Club Westchester in support of legislation that would change how golf courses are assessed.  The group says it will also make sure that golf clubs pay their fair share of taxes.

The controversy goes back to a fight between Donald Trump, the Trump National Golf Club, and the village of Briarcliff. The village says the property the course is on is more lucrative than what the club says.

Sen. David Carlucci and Assemblywoman Sandy Galen are co-sponsoring the bill, which is currently in committee. If adopted into law, municipalities would be able to assess the value of golf courses based on their "highest and best use" rather than current use. 

Galef and Carlucci organized the rally, as well as the group Indivisible Briarcliff-Ossining.  They say this all comes down to fair taxation.

“We have an egregious case we want to close that loophole to protect property taxpayers. Our legislation brings property tax law into the 21st century and gives local municipalities an extra tool to make sure that property taxpayers are paying their fair share,” says Carlucci.

News 12 has reached out to the Trump Organization about the matter, but hasn’t heard back.

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin says she is not in support of the bill. She says properties could go from undervalued to overvalued in the blink of an eye.
