A homeless man in Newburgh has been indicted in a machete attack that left a woman seriously injured.

George Herring is charged with attempted murder and assault after allegedly striking the woman near Quassaick Creek last Saturday.

Prosecutors say the victim's skull was fractured, one of her fingers was cut off, and two others had to be surgically reattached.
