A 14-year-old boy remains in the hospital after being stabbed before school in New Rochelle on Wednesday.
The alleged suspect, a classmate at Isaac Young Middle School, is now facing charges.
Dr. Anthony Bongo, the principal of the school, says the fight took place at a baseball field near school grounds. He says it ended with a 14-year-old being stabbed and his 13-year-old classmate facing assault charges.
Bongo says the boy have had problems in the past.
"Both boys have made progress the second half of the year. We've been working with them, there are issues that do follow these young men," he says.
Vincent Mirabile, a retired New Rochelle detective who worked as a security guard in the school, says he encountered the suspect several times. He says he once had to restrain the boy after he claims the suspect attacked him.
Mirabile claims school administrators could have prevented Wednesday's outcome. He says that officials were aware of the behavior problem, but they failed to act on it.
"He was always running around, pushing kids and throwing food. He didn't like to sit down and follow rules," he says.
Bongo says there has been a drop in fighting at the school, but police have already been there 22 times this year on calls of disorderly conduct and weapons possession. From January to May of last year, police responded to the school 34 times.
The boy is currently recovering in the hospital. The suspect has been suspended and could be expelled.
