Pollen levels are expected to surge as spring arrives
On Wednesday, News 12 meteorologist Addison Green discussed allergens and pollen production in the Hudson Valley.
The Hudson Valley contains several different allergens, such as grass, trees and weeds.
Each allergen has its own time frame of when it starts to peak.
For example, in April tree pollen peaks.
Around May and June, grass pollen peaks, both of which contribute to allergen woes.
"We've been noticing that the trend in pollen production has been gradually increasing over the past several years. We've had temperatures that have been slowly on the rise over the course of the past several years, several decades. All that warmth has been allowing the growing season to start a little bit more ahead of schedule each and every year, to the point where you're starting to see plants and trees starting to sprout as we go into late February towards early March," said News 12 meteorologist Addison Green.
For high pollen days, Addison recommends newborns, infants, elderly and those with respiratory concerns to take extra precautions before stepping outside.
To avoid bringing pollen inside your homes, wash your hands frequently, dispose of dirty laundry outside of your bedroom and shower at night to wash any pollen or dirt off before bedtime.
