A pickup truck driver died Wednesday morning following a collision with a dump truck in South Amboy, according to police.

Authorities say the crash happened around 3:45 a.m. on Route 9/35 North near the Washington Street off-ramp.

Police say it appears that the driver of a Ford F-250 was driving north on Route 35 and collided with the dump truck that had just “entered the roadway from Route 9.” The crash caused the pickup truck to strike the guardrail, overturn and catch on fire, according to police.

The crash caused traffic to back up for miles along Route 35 North on Wednesday morning during the morning rush hour.

Police say that when the South Amboy Fire Department extinguished the truck fire, the driver of the Ford F-250 was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the driver is being withheld until the family can be notified.

Officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or anyone with other information to call Sgt. Steve Clark at 732-525-5939.
