A growing memorial now lines the sidewalk outside in Fort Greene in honor of a local artist who was killed.

The memorial is located a block away from where 43‑year‑old Jamel Davis was shot and killed Sunday morning outside his apartment in the Whitman Homes NYCHA complex.

Candles, handwritten notes and the sound of Davis's own music filled the courtyard as friends and neighbors gathered to honor the local artist.

Police say Davis was found with gunshot wounds around 10 a.m. outside the NYCHA complex. He was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital.

Those who knew Davis say the area where the vigil now stands was his regular hangout spot. Many described him as a talented performer and a fixture in the community.

“I was just talking to him. He was in his show outfit. I gave him a compliment. I had no idea it would be the last time,” one mourner said.

Police say the victim and the shooter knew each other, but no arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released.

“It’s hard, we are trying to fight gun violence every day,” said Chad, who knew Davis. “I was just in shock. It’s hard to believe. People know him. This is his spot. He was a great artist, a kind guy.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the police.
