Bloomfield police have arrested an 18-year-old man accused of stabbing a 17-year-old earlier this week.

Johan Ibarra was arrested on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. and charged with attempted murder.

Officials say that Ibarra was quickly identified as a suspect in the crime.

“I want to thank the Bloomfield Police Department for their swift work in taking the suspect into custody, and our officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel for providing immediate care to the victim. This has been a deeply upsetting incident for our community. The safety of our residents, especially young people, is our highest priority,” Mayor Jenny Mundell wrote in a statement.

Ibarra is now being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
