A Facebook post about a gunman on campus fueled more unwarranted fears for parents today in the Middletown school district.
The social media post under the screenname NY Moms Group read: "Middletown High School had a bomb threat yesterday and this morning they are in lockdown until further notice. They believe someone is inside the building with a gun."
Middletown school administrators say the post is being investigated as an intentional, malicious false report.
The hoax comes on the heels of three bomb scares in the district over the past couple weeks.
Administrators met with Sen. Charles Schumer Monday to call for stricter laws surrounding the so called "swatting" events.
Superintendent Dr. Ken Eastwood said Thursday the threats are being made through websites that either protects users' identity or allows for fake usernames. "If you post something, if you make false calls in, there has to be some repercussion. It's the same as yelling fire inside a theater, which we now know to be a crime," says Dr. Eastwood.
All of the false reports are under investigation by police. School district attorneys are looking into whether or not websites protecting user information in cases like this can be held accountable.
