County officials identified the couple as Richard and Ann DeLucia, 71 and 70, respectively. Investigators found a note at the DeLucias' home Wednesday afternoon.
According to a county spokesperson, the note indicated Mr. DeLucia was distraught about his wife's medical issues and wanted to end her suffering.
He made his move at 9:40 a.m. in a fourth-floor room.
Police Commissioner Thomas Gleason says officers arrived in less than three minutes and found two people with gunshot wounds and a .38-caliber revolver on the floor.
Hospital workers tried to render aid, but both of the DeLucias died from their wounds, officials say.
Authorities locked down the hospital for nearly an hour. Police searched the building and said there was no further threat.
The medical center says it never ceased caring for or admitting patients.
