Officials: 2nd Silver Sands fire intentionally set
A second fire inside two storage containers at Silver Sands State Park was intentionally set ablaze following last week's fire that destroyed a $9 million construction project at the beach, officials say.
The fire broke out Sunday inside two metal storage containers at the beach, not far from where last week's fire destroyed three nearly completed buildings.
Officials say extra police patrols were on hand at the state park following Sunday's fire.
The State Police Fire and Explosion Investigating Unit deemed the fire suspicious by early afternoon, noting there was vandalism nearby. Police say a maintenance garage was vandalized Friday night when rocks were used to shatter some of the windows.
Police say a passerby noticed smoke coming from the two construction trailers before 7:30 a.m.
Firefighters found one storage container engulfed and the other with smoke coming from it. It was quickly put out.
Officials say there's no reason to believe the two fires are connected.
It comes after two of the three almost complete buildings were razed in the fire Tuesday night.
The buildings were part of a controversial $9.1 million project for a new concession building, restrooms, offices and a maintenance garage at the park.
News 12 reached out to a DEEP spokesperson and Milford's mayor but has not heard back.
Anyone with information about Sunday's fire is asked to call the Connecticut Arson Hotline at 1-800-84-ARSON. There is a $2,500 reward.
