Yonkers schools are facing potentially devastating budget cuts, and more than 100 staff members could lose their jobs.

Without receiving extra funding, the district faces 101 layoffs that include 60 teachers, 35 civil service workers and six administrators. Other cuts include the elimination of sports programs, in addition to fewer bus monitors, supplies and materials.

Officials say the $26 million shortfall currently faced by the district is something that can only be remedied by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Last year, Cuomo filled the $28 million budget gap caused by an accounting error.

School Board President Nader Sayegh says the district needs the funding, but also needs a long-term solution. According to Sayegh, if Yonkers was treated as other urban districts such as Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester, there would be no need to beg the state for funding each year.

There are only six weeks left in the legislative season, which is causing Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano to urge parents, students and teachers to work together to get word out of their plight.

Spano says that students need support from Albany now more than ever.
