Westchester County leaders honored a group of New Rochelle school nurses for administering Narcan to a student.

The group of five nurses was commended for taking action in an emergency.

The school district says a New Rochelle High School student went to the nurse's office last week after vaping and not feeling well.

The nurses told News 12 the student presented signs of an opioid overdose and they called 911.

The student lost consciousness, according to the nurses. This is when they administered Narcan.

It's unclear exactly what substance the student may have reacted to.

The girl was taken to the hospital where she eventually recovered.

The county recognized the group's quick thinking to prevent a situation that could've been worse.

"We're just so grateful that she was well enough to get to us before the full effects of whatever she took hit her, that we were there together, that we have the training, that we have the Narcan," says New Rochelle school nurse Wendy Miceli

The student has returned to school, according to the nurses.

The incident brings the nationwide opioid crisis into focus closer to home.

The state Health Department released its opioid report showing a 14% increase in overdose deaths involving opioids in 2021 compared to the year before.

School officials said they haven't been able to recover the vape, which could help determine what substance the student reacted to and where it possibly came from as part of the ongoing investigation.
