A failure of the left front tire caused a bus carrying Farmingdale High School students to crash in Orange County in 2023, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
The board says a post-crash examination revealed that the vehicles front tires "showed evidence of prolonged operation in an underinflated condition."
The examination also revealed that the "failed left steer axle tire exhibited more severe underinflation indicators."
Two people were killed and at least five students were critically injured in the crash that happened on Sept. 21, 2023 I-84 in Wawayanda.
Band director Gina Pellettiere and chaperone Beatrice Ferrari were killed in the crash.
