Norwalk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Alexandra Estrella is leaving the school system at the end of the school year.

School officials say Estrella accepted an offer from Gwinnett County, Georgia, public schools to become their new superintendent.

Estrella joined Norwalk Public Schools in July 2020. During her tenure, Norwalk Public Schools consistently ranked as the top-performing city school district in Connecticut. Officials say the district’s graduation rate reached 92.6% in 2024, chronic absenteeism declined to 17.9% during the 2024–25 school year, and districtwide academic growth in English/language arts and mathematics exceeded state averages.

However, her term was also marred with controversy over cuts made during last year's budget process.

Estrella's contracted was extended while budget negotiations were underway, nearly derailing the process.

“It is incredibly difficult to step away from a community that has meant so much to me and my family,” Estrella said. “Both of my sons graduated from Norwalk schools, and the relationships we have built here will always remain deeply meaningful.”
