As cases begin to rise across other parts of the country, Nassau County officials say they are taking reopening seriously and trying to do so safely to minimize the risk of a increase here.

According to officials, less than 1% of all those tested for COVID-19 over the past 24 hours have tested positive – with only 38 new cases reported.

County Executive Laura Curran says as the county celebrates the news and accomplishments of reopening safely – they are watching the increase in cases across 25 states.

“Given the surge in cases, I do think Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s protocols for at-risk travelers makes sense. We do not want to back track,” says Curran.

In addition, Curran announced that the county is also reviewing options with school and education stakeholders for a safe reopening of schools.

“I personally would like to work towards a safe reopening of in-person school in September,” says Curran.

Officials say some children depend on school meals, and the county is working with a grab and go meal program as families still struggle to put food on the tables during the pandemic.

Nassau set aside $1 million for food and has distributed food to more than 15,000 families across Long Island.

Lastly, the county announced a large-scale food distribution will be held at Nassau Coliseum on July 1 – which will give families enough food that can last up to a week.
