It was a bittersweet day in Montvale on Thursday as a family farm closed its doors after more than a century in operation.
DePiero’s Farm Stand & Greenhouses has been in operation since 1924. The owners say that rising costs have led them to the decision to close.
“It’s been a rollercoaster. We knew it was coming, but it came way too fast. It’s been wonderful to be seeing all these people here – coming in. Customers who’ve been familiar with us for many, many years,” says Tammy DePiero-Palmieri, managing member of the farm.
Many longtime customers stopped by on Thursday for the last day.
“My mother came here all the time. They have the best corn. My mother loved the salad bar. But they’re just like the best people you’ve ever want to meet. Just wonderful people,” says Laura Beer, of Park Ridge.
Others went out of their way to come to the stand to get last-minute produce.
“I’m glad that I came here. I really went out of my way to come here because I knew it was the last day…came here to buy some flowers and things that I needed,” says Roger Pic, of Pearl River, New York.
DePiero-Palmieri says that she has been humbled to see how many lives her family has touched over the years.
“After my father's passing and seeing the response of the lives he’s touched over his 80-something years, was remarkable. It’s really his smile, his friendly demeanor. He touched a lot of people in this community – as well as his dad and now my brother,” she says.
DePiero-Palmieri says she now plans to spend more time with her grandchildren.
