President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries and higher tariff rates on dozens of nations that run trade surpluses with the United States.
The United States imports the second-largest amount of coffee beans according to the USDA. Coffee beans are harvested in Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Central America and Mexico.
Vietnam is hit with a 46% tariff.
Paper Plane Coffee Co. is owned and operated by Jonathan Echeverry, a fifth-generation Colombian coffee grower.
Echeverry talks to News 12 about how the tariffs will impact the coffee industry.
He says the tariffs aren't paid by the country, rather the importer is getting the bill. That importer will then pass down the cost through the supply chain thus higher prices for roasters, higher prices for cafes and higher prices for the consumer.
