Teams are forced to deal with turnover, but for years, the Staples High boys soccer team didn't have to worry about the man steering the ship.
After almost twenty years though, the Wreckers are set to enter a new era after longtime head coach Dan Woog recently announced his retirement.
His mentor, Albie Leffler, suggested he get into coaching back in 1975 and Nearly half a century, numerous trips around the world, and one state championship later,
Coach Woog says he'll miss the players the most.
"I'm leaving with a smile on my face and joy in my heart. A coach's job ends when the whistle blows, we can't call timeouts, we can't make 15 or 20 substitutions, our job is to prepare players to think for themselves, make decisions in the moment under pressure and then live or die by those decisions. What you remember are not the games themselves but the chemistry of the players, the intensity, the emotion. It's been a fantastic ride and I'm a happy guy."
