Lawmakers in Congress are demanding answers from the Social Security Administration after the agency issued billions in overpayments and is demanding it back.
The Social Security Administration is trying to get the money back from people who are among the most vulnerable.
According the agency's inspector general, it clawed back $4.7 billion of overpayments during the 2022 fiscal year while another $21.6 billion remains outstanding.
Social Security is sending out letters to recipients telling them they can either repay the money or it will withhold monthly payments until the money is recovered.

If you received a letter you have the right to appeal the overpayment decision or the amount the Social Security Administration asked for. Another option is to ask Social Security to waive collection of the overpayment if you can't afford to pay it back. Flexible payment plans are also offered.
