There is worry among parents in South Salem tonight after learning that a fifth-grader brought a knife to school Wednesday.

In a statement sent to Lewisboro Elementary School parents, the interim superintendent says the child had the knife in her backpack and her friends notified teachers. It also states that the student made verbal threats to two other students.

Parents are upset that school officials didn't notify them of the incident until seven hours later. One parent says he understands that school officials had to get the facts straight first, but he doesn't understand why they weren't more forthcoming.

The interim superintendent's letter also stated that the student is not in school and is being disciplined.

School officials wouldn't comment on the matter.
