The gun violence initiatives can't come soon enough in the City of Newburgh, where police are investigating daily shootings this past week - including two on Monday.

Shots were fired in the latest incident on Lander and Renwick streets as high school students got ready to return to school for the first time since last week's shootings. All three of the district's high school campuses were closed on Wednesday after four teenage students were shot, allegedly by their classmates, on the streets.

One of the incidents unfolded in front of a bus that was letting off elementary students.

Authorities say they are ramping up efforts to crack down on the violence. Meanwhile, a local barber and ex-convict is starting a community movement of his own.

Joey Cabon and his business partner Gustavo Watts say they are concerned about the city's kids.

They're offering the Clippers Not Guns initiative, which will take any at-risk teen under their wing and give them the tools necessary to become a licensed barber. All they ask is that interested kids stay in school - and are ready to hustle in a much different way.

Newburgh's shootings Monday put high school campuses on a temporary "hold in place" and canceled all after-school activities.
