The highly anticipated federal economic stimulus checks have started being delivered to Americans, and the government says that even those who don't work or pay federal taxes are eligible for payments up to $1,200.
Social Security recipients, recipients of Railroad Retirement, disability or veterans' benefits and low income citizens who do not make enough money to normally have to file a tax return all qualify for a check.
Mae Carpenter, the commissioner of Westchester's senior programs, says there's nothing for most of these individuals to do but wait for the check. She also says if you normally get a check from the government, they will know how to find you.
The IRS has added a portal to its website specifically for poor Americans who don't normally file their taxes. To create an account, you're required to give some basic personal information so the government knows how to deliver the check.
Carpenter says at this stage, she's not worried about seniors not getting their money but is concerned about scams and scammers targeting them.
She says to not give your personal information to people you don't know, and when in doubt, call the IRS directly to ensure the person on the other end of the line is legitimate.
