The Haitian American Community Coalition opened the doors of a new building in Bushwick meant to serve queer Caribbeans in Brooklyn.

Site director Tyheim Walker says the new LGBTQ+ outreach center, Plug’d, is where Brooklyn residents can get health resources, print out a resume or even apply for affordable housing.

Staff member Antoine Olushoga says there can often be internalized homophobia in this community. He says being of Caribbean descent helps him in his work with Plug'd street clinics that bring health care to the city's most vulnerable on mobile vans.

The group says they hope Plug'd can be the safe space for young queer Caribbean kids that many adults didn't have growing up.

In 2022, the HCC celebrated 40 years of serving the Caribbean community in Brooklyn. Those who are interested can visit the center at 1491 Broadway in Bushwick.
