Nine families were impacted on Sunday by a fire that spread from a backyard shed to multifamily homes in Garfield.

The call came in around 12:15 p.m. Dozens of area fire departments came to the scene to assist. Fire officials said it was controlled within the hour.

“For the most part, they'll be habitable,” said Assistant Garfield Fire Chief E.J. Morano. “There's a lot of smoke and water damage. The main fire building, which was 568 Palisade Avenue, sustained some damage to the rear of the structure. All of my guys and all of our mutual aid partners did a great job keeping this under wraps really quickly.”

Garfield fire officials said six people were injured - four civilians and two firefighters. One firefighter was taken to the hospital. Officials said their injuries were from smoke inhalation.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started. The Bergen County Arson Squad was also on-scene investigating.
