News 12 has learned former Yonkers City Council president and current candidate Chuck Lesnick suffered a heart attack days ago.

He revealed the news in a statement Tuesday night, shortly after polls closed.

He said the medical emergency happened Saturday while he was preparing to canvass.

Lesnick said he underwent successful surgery and is now recovering

His statement read in part:

"The polls just closed in Yonkers. No matter what happens with the outcome it is not the most important thing that happened to me this week. On Saturday morning I had a heart attack while getting ready to go canvassing. Thankfully my running mate Corazon Pineda Issac had the presence of mind to call 911 while my wife Dr.Beth Schorr Lesnick, a Gastroenterologist at Westchester Medical Center “WMC” lined up the fantastic staff at WMC to take me into surgery as soon as I arrived by transport vehicle. I had a stent put in the artery to my heart and have the past few days recuperating and thinking about my health, my family, my community and my country. I believe that this incident is similar to the one that Senator Bernie Sanders had in 2019 which caused him to slow down and eventually build back his strength to the vibrant state he remains at today."
