It's a never-ending story for village officials, homeowners and business owners in Mamaroneck – several rounds of potentially severe storms this week pose major flood risks for the Sound Shore village and surrounding areas.
"It is always nerve-wracking because you don't know how much you're going to get," resident and property owner Vinny Caldarola said.
It's all hands on deck for village employees preparing for any weather scenario. Most pre-storm work includes cleaning stormwater catch basins and preparing first responders to close roads and pull off rescue efforts if necessary.
Still, there's only so much preparedness one can do when the village made up of several flood-prone areas caught between the Sound and several converging rivers.
"Mamaroneck is prone to this kind of stuff, so we do as much preparation as we possibly can, but the biggest preparation is to be ready to act if something requires it later on during the storm," said Charles Strome, Mamaroneck’s interim village manager.
It'll be no easy feat for the village this week with severe storms expected to bring several inches of rain both Tuesday night into Wednesday and again Friday into Saturday.
"It's ridiculous and it's been 30 years," Caldarola said.
Mamaroneck has several long-term, expensive projects to address flooding issues, but they are still several years away from being implemented.
