NYPD sources: Captain arrested, charged with DWI after boat fire near Hart Island

Police arrested 33-year-old Joshua Brito on reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated charges.

A boat captain was arrested and charged with DWI following a boat fire that left one person with serious injuries, NYPD sources say.

Twenty-two others were rescued and expected to be OK.

According to the FDNY, three people were rescued from the water – 19 others swam to Hart Island where they were picked up by the NYPD, Coast Guard and FDNY boats and “transported back over to the docks at the Yacht Club on City Island.”

Police arrested 33-year-old Joshua Brito on reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated charges.

FDNY officials and the Coast Guard are working to determine the cause of the fire.

On Sunday, the boat was seen charred and destroyed near the shore of the island.
