Firefighters made a heroic rescue of a woman from a burning apartment building in Mount Vernon Saturday.
Officials say the four-alarm fire at South Second Avenue started around 6 a.m. More than 70 tenants were forced out onto the street as firefighters raced in to rescue a woman who collapsed on the fifth floor. Firefighters said the woman had no pulse when she was found and they quickly performed CPR to revive her.
At least six families will not be able to return to their apartments. The Red Cross is helping them with temporary housing. The woman rescued from her apartment was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where she is recovering. Fire officials say food warming on a stove may have caused the fire.
