More details are emerging about the man who police say jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge yesterday.
Investigators say Scott Uzzo, 24, told his family in Hawthorne he was going to jump from the span. Family members say they tried to stop him but he was too depressed about getting fired from his job last week. Uzzo worked for the Greenburgh Water and Sewer Department for about a year.
State police say Uzzo was driving on the northbound side of the bridge around 3 p.m. when he stopped midspan and jumped over the railing. They say he made the jump quickly without communicating with anyone.Police say they're not optimistic that Uzzo could have survived the fall and the cold water temperatures. High winds and rough waters have shelved the search for him tonight, but police say they hope to recover his body to bring some closure for his family. Authorities say three people were talked down from suicide attempts on the Tappan Zee this year. Two other people committed suicide in 2011 on the bridge, and Uzzo would make three, police say.
