The executive credited with saving Armonk-based IBM has died at the age of 83.
Louis Gerstner died on Sunday, according to the company's current chairman and CEO.
Gerstner served as chairman and CEO from 1993 to 2002. Before he arrived, there was concern about whether IBM would remain in Westchester and whether it would survive.
Current CEO Arvind Krishna said Gerstner changed the culture, including paying closer attention to customers. He added the most important thing Gerstner did was keeping IBM together.
Gerstner is survived by his wife, daughter and granddaughter.
