Police body-camera video obtained by News 12 shows the terrifying moments last month in Walden when a police officer rushed in and saved a 1-year-old girl who had stopped breathing.
It happened around 7:25 p.m. on Sept. 14 on Pleasant Avenue, when police were dispatched for a choking child.
Patricia Strunk says her daughter, Arabella, has a medical condition that caused her to choke on saliva.
“I’m telling my partner, 'Call 911,' and then she just went limp right in my arms,” Strunk said.
A neighbor saw the commotion and stepped in to help the frantic mother. She was holding Arabella when the police pulled up to the scene.
Village of Walden Police Officer Jordan Mauro, 28, was the first to arrive. He says he got there within two minutes of the call and immediately realized how serious the situation was.
“The child’s lips were blue. I knew it was a dire situation,” Mauro said. “She was definitely not breathing, and she was limp in someone’s arms."
Mauro pulled the baby into his arms and started back blows. His quick actions worked, and Arabella was quickly able to breathe.
“I gave her five to six backslaps, and then she looked at me and started crying,” Mauro said.
Strunk says if it wasn’t for the officers, her daughter might not be alive.
“If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I’d have my baby today,” she said.
Walden Police Chief Daniel D’Elicio says the outcome is proof of the department’s training and why every second matters in a crisis.
“I was shaking after the call. It was definitely a very scary situation,” Mauro said.
The village later honored Mauro, along with Officer McCutcheon and dispatchers McClintock and Murphy, for their lifesaving efforts that night.
“There’s not enough words to thank these people for what they’ve done,” Strunk said.
Chief D’Elicio credited the teamwork of everyone involved, calling it a reminder of how every role in an emergency can make the difference between tragedy and survival.
