News 12 is continuing to hear from frustrated auto shop owners in the Newburgh area who say they’re being targeted in a rash of unsolved vandalism.
“Something has to be done. The man is violating every business in this community and it’s beyond belief at this point,” says Darrin Krahmer, the owner of Amazing Customs.
Krahmer says his shop on 9W in the City of Newburgh has 16 customer vehicles with smashed windows in his lot, due to a rogue vandal on the loose. He showed News 12 the damage on Thursday.
“The most recent one was three days ago. It’s stressful because you work and try to support your family but all that extra cash that you think you might get, it doesn’t work out that way,” says Krahmer.
Auto shop owners first started coming forward to News 12 with similar concerns earlier this week and we’ve now confirmed that a total of eight shops in the area have been hit. The businesses say the problem started several years ago and has gotten worse within the last few months.
“He had stolen a motorcycle from Collision and Chrome. They picked him up but a couple hours later he was walking right past my shop with a big old smile on his face,” Krahmer says.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, that incident occurred in March and the suspect arrested has three, back-to-back open cases for vandalizing auto shops in the area. Krahmer believes the same suspect is targeting his shop, but authorities say there’s not enough evidence.
“This is ridiculous,” says Krahmer. “Why is he still walking the streets to be able to commit the same exact crime and victimize everybody?”
Krahmer and other shop owners claim they’re paying out of pocket to fix the damages. In Krahmer’s case, he says the vandalism has cost him over $12,000.
On Wednesday, New Windsor police confirmed a nearby auto shop had five customer vehicles’ windows smashed on Sunday.
The vehicles were ransacked for money and personal items, according to officials who say no arrests have been made in that case.
News 12 reached out to City of Newburgh police for additional information about the cases but did not immediately receive a response.
