Elevated levels of a cancer-causing chemical was found in Rockland County water.
A letter sent to residents from SUEZ Water of New York says that a biochemical called THM had been found in the water. It said that out of 13 sites tested, two showed elevated levels of THM at Lake Deforest Reservoir in Haverstraw.
Suez spokesman Bill Madden says THM is created when chlorine reacts with organic material. He says routine tests in March showed levels are only slightly higher than normal and before that the levels were OK. He says residents can still drink the water and that there is no need to boil the water or buy bottled water.
Despite concerns from residents, county officials echoed that there are no immediate health concerns and that the water is safe to drink.
SUEZ is taking steps to fix the problem and will retest in three months.
SUEZ customers with concerns about the safety of their water are asked to call the company directly or contact the Rockland Health Department.
