A 71-year-old woman is now fighting for her life in the hospital after she was hit by a Mercedes van in Marble Hill.

Police say on Sunday at 10:30 am, a 41-year-old man was driving a Mercedes van and hit a 71-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man trying to cross the street. The van was turning left onto Broadway from 225th Street at the time of the crash.

It happened in front of an Applebees. News 12 spoke with an employee.

"This gentleman was driving on the phone then made a wide turn coming off to 225th and hit two people," said Natalia Torres, who works at Applebees.

Torres says people always speed through the intersection that is currently covered with construction.

City data shows more than 65 injuries at the intersection of 225th St and Broadway in the last five years.

People say drivers never follow the 25 MPH speed limit in the area. They say they're praying for the woman who was hurt and hope drivers stay more vigilant on the roads.
