Thunderstorms give way to strong winds to begin 2025 in the Bronx

After 60-degree weather this past weekend, temperatures begin to tumble on New Year's Eve with rain returning Tuesday evening. A cold and stormy pattern takes hold into 2025 that has a chance to bring significant cold and snow.

On-and-off downpours are expected after 8 p.m. through 1 a.m. Thunder and lightning are possible, which could be the first time that is ever recorded on New Year's Eve. This could be very dangerous for those in Times Square for the ball drop. Road conditions will be impacted, so allow for extra time getting from point A to point B this evening and overnight.
Midnight temperatures are expected to be at 50 degrees, which would be the sixth-warmest midnight temperature ever recorded. Not only will it be a wet and warm New Year's celebration, but it will also be a windy one too. Some downpours could have 40 mph gusts.
Even though the rain ends by 2 a.m., the wind remains and picks up into Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for gusts that could approach 50 mph between Wednesday 3 p.m. and Thursday 10 p.m. The strongest gusts will likely be Thursday afternoon as much colder weather invades the area.
Highs on Sunday reached 60 degrees, and temperatures tonight will be near 50 degrees. Highs Thursday may stop just short of 40 degrees, and it will feel like below freezing all weekend. That sets the stage for a potential snowstorm on Monday. It is too soon for details, which will be clearer by Thursday/Friday.
At this point, it may be a situation where it is "too cold to snow" as the arctic cold pushes any storm system south of the region into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. It can continue trending in that direction or flip back where the borough can see several inches of fluffy snow. Again, too soon for details, but stay tuned and follow Allan Nosoff @AWxNYC on Instagram and X for hyperlocal updates into this weekend.
