The last of three public hearings on Westchester's 2012 budget was held last night, and now the County Board must decide what, if any, changes will be made to County Executive Rob Astorino's (R-Westchester) proposed spending plan. Astorino's proposed budget calls for $100 million in spending, including support for several popular events, including Fourth of July fireworks at the Kensico Dam Plaza. However, the point of contention in the budget is the elimination of 210 county jobs.The county executive says jobs will be slashed if unions refuse to have members pay at least some of the premiums for their health insurance.However, members of the CSEA union insist that Astorino's administration has never formally made that request, which county officials deny. Meanwhile, Democrats on the County Board say they plan to save 185 of the 210 jobs on the chopping block without raising taxes. The board is scheduled to vote on the budget tomorrow. The deadline for the final adoption of the spending plan is Dec. 27.
