A piece of New Jersey's past could soon reappear in rearview mirrors thanks to a bill awaiting consideration by a legislative committee.

Sponsored by Sen. Kristin Corrado and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak, the bill, S-3265 was first introduced in 2020, then again in 2024. It was resubmitted for a third time last month and is awaiting consideration by the Senate Transportation Committee.

“The license plates shall display a design that replicates the classic New Jersey license plates issued by the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles between 1979 and 1991,” the bill reads.

An application to obtain an old-school blue plate would cost $50, plus an additional $10 annual fee.

“The idea to revive New Jersey's blue license plate was recommended to me by a constituent. It turns out that many New Jerseyans, especially classic car enthusiasts, favor the vintage license plate design,” Corrado said in a statement after the bill was first introduced a few years ago.

If approved, a fund will be established with the plate fee revenue; some of those funds will be used annually for state transportation projects.
