City Council votes on Fire Safety Package four months after tragic Twin Parks fire
It’s been just over four months
since the Twin Parks fire tragedy took the lives of 17 Bronx residents. The
City Council has voted to introduce a Fire Safety Package that makes sure
nothing like that happens again.
The first bill, proposed by Councilmember
Oswald Feliz, strengthens what constitutes as a self-closing door, making it
clear that doors must fully latch when shut.
Feliz also proposed a bill that
would reduce the amount of time a landlord has to correct any self-closing door
violations from 21 days to 14.
A bill proposed by Councilmember
Pierina Sanchez requires the FDNY to provide New Yorkers with information on how
to properly use space heaters.
Councilmember Shahana Hanif also proposed a bill that prohibits the sale
of space heaters without certain safety features, like automatic shut-offs.
With all of these bills passed
Thursday, residential buildings will be made safer for both tenants and
landlords.
