A Chihuahua is changing perceptions of how dogs and cats relate to each other by her act of motherly kindness: She is nursing two kittens.
Jamie Apfel, who is a veterinary technician, brought home two small kittens from the Hi Tor Animal Care Center with the intention of bottle-feeding them. But she soon found that her dog, Lucy Liu, already had the job covered.
"Needless to say, these kittens are not going to be afraid of dogs," shelter workers joke.
A South Nyack resident found the abandoned kittens and brought them to the shelter. The kittens are just two of hundreds that end up in shelters amid mating season.
The shelter says the next step will be convincing Lucy Liu to let go of her "adopted" babies.
The kittens will be ready for adoption at Hi Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona in four to six weeks, but hundreds of animals are available now.
