Advocates for the blind are raising awareness for safer street crossings in the Hudson Valley.

They held an event called the 'Blindfold Challenge' in downtown Yonkers on Wednesday. Those with normal vision were blindfolded and asked to cross a busy street.

"The purpose of the challenge is to get people with vision to understand what it is like for people without the benefit of sight to cross streets, especially streets without an accessible signal," says Anne Chiappett, of the Westchester Council for the Blind.

Chiapett says accessible pedestrian signals are devices that communicate information about the "walk and don't walk" intervals at signalized intersections in non-visual formats to pedestrians who are blind or who have low vision.
